Besides its emotional value it has the practical advantage of a higher turnover without price reduction. The use of 'the family' in advertising should however not be taken too literally; your real family will help you when your down and out, if you'd claim this loyalty of Coca-Cola or McDonald's, they wouldn't take you serious and point out that it's only a commercial.

Often family packs consist of separate units, hereby you can ask yourself the question how social it is to give everyone it's own separate unit in contrast with sharing one certain product. Everybody his or her own can, his or her own television, his or her own life.
